SectionsHomer angler wins the Homer Winter King Salmon TournamentMother Nature came through for the 2007 Winter King Salmon Fishing Tournament Saturday, March 31 in Homer, Alaska. A frozen harbor just one week before caused the tournament to be delayed, the weather paid off and so did the fish! Clear skies and warm, sunny weather made for a beautiful day on the Kachemak Bay. There were 855 anglers in 243 boats, and these lucky anglers caught a total of 75 winter king salmon, known as some of the best tasting salmon in the world. Total prize money awarded to the top 10 finishers was $63,900, $975 more than last year. Boat side bet winners took home $39,468, slightly less than last year. First place winner was Colt Belmonte of Homer fishing on the “Fish Truck” His prize winning fish weighed 33.86 lbs. Colt won $17,892. Stop by the “Alibi” and congratulate Colt. He was also the winning Captain of the boat – congratulations Colt, our 2007 BIG FISH WINNER! He wins the John Hillstrand Memorial Trophy, in honor of the late John Hillstrand. The winner of the Youth prize went to Dylan Faulkner of Homer with a 17.6 lb fish. Dylan wins the youth trophy and the Bill Thompson Memorial Youth Prize of $300, established by the family of the late Bill Thompson of Kenai. The boat side bets totaled $39,468 and will be certified by the Winter King Committee and announced on Monday, April 2 at the Homer Chamber of Commerce.
