Welcome to Homer!Imagine if you will... a little town nestled on the shore of a glistening bay; glaciers and mountains rimming the shoreline and active volcanoes looming in the distance. It's an eclectic town, with folks who are friendly and helpful, artsy and outdoorsy, hardy and self-reliant, fun-loving and free spirited. This is Homer, Alaska, on Kachemak Bay. Made famous as 'The End of the Road' in Tom Bodett's tales, Homer is at the end of the Sterling Highway surrounded by wilderness and ocean. The town serves as the jumping off point by ferry, boat or plane to the vast remote area. It is also the commercial hub for the surrounding area. Homer has a natural, protected, deep water harbor for cargo and the bay provides safe anchorage during stormy weather. The Kenai Peninsula is known as "Alaska's Playground", full of recreational activities, such as fishing, kayaking and bear viewing. Homer is headquarters for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and is within the boundaries of the Kachemak Bay Research Reserve. The bay provides a pristine environment for ecological research and education. The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, in early spring each year, celebrates the arrival of the migratory birds that use the bay for feeing, nesting and aggregating. This unique combination of location, commerce, beauty, natural resources and wilderness makes Homer a wonderful place to visit and a great place to live.
